James IV

James IV was king of Scotland from 1488 to 1513. He strengthened royal government, promoted learning and shipbuilding, and was killed at the Battle of Flodden.

Scottish royal burghs: Scottish towns granted privileges and governed under royal charters. Their charters and trade gave the crown influence over Scotland’s towns.
James III of Scotland: King of Scotland from 1460 to 1488, whose strained relations with nobles ended in rebellion and death. His father’s defeat at Sauchieburn brought James IV to the throne.
Henry VII of England: King of England from 1485 to 1509 and founder of the Tudor dynasty. He arranged his daughter Margaret’s marriage to James to secure peace with Scotland.
Battle of Flodden: A 1513 battle in Northumberland where English forces defeated a Scottish invasion and killed James IV. James’s death in this battle ended his reign and transformed Scotland’s succession.
Scottish Parliament: The legislative assembly of the Kingdom of Scotland, composed of the estates of the realm. James used parliamentary statutes to strengthen royal authority and regulate the kingdom.
Battle of Sauchieburn: A battle fought in 1488 between James III and rebellious Scottish nobles near Stirling. The victory of the rebels secured James IV’s accession after his father’s death.
James V of Scotland: King of Scotland from 1513 to 1542 and son of James IV and Margaret Tudor. He inherited the crown as an infant after his father died at Flodden.
Great Michael: A large Scottish warship built for James IV and launched in 1511. The ship embodied James’s effort to build a powerful royal navy.
Court of Session: Scotland’s supreme civil court, established in 1532 to provide a permanent central forum for justice. Its later creation continued the centralizing legal reforms begun under James.
House of Stewart: A Scottish royal dynasty that ruled Scotland from the late fourteenth century and later inherited the English throne. James IV belonged to the dynasty whose authority his reign helped consolidate.
