James Joseph Sylvester

James Joseph Sylvester (1814–1897) was an English mathematician whose work helped establish matrix theory and invariant theory and advanced number theory and algebra.

Invariant theory: The study of algebraic quantities that remain unchanged under specified transformations. Sylvester helped develop this field and coined the term “invariant.”
Arthur Cayley: An English mathematician who made foundational contributions to abstract algebra, geometry, and matrix theory. Cayley and Sylvester developed matrix ideas in overlapping work and sustained correspondence.
Sylvester's law of inertia: A theorem stating that a real quadratic form has invariant counts of positive, negative, and zero squares under invertible changes of variables. It is Sylvester’s best-known classification result for quadratic forms.
Sylvester medal: A Royal Society award for outstanding contributions to mathematical science, established in 1901. The medal commemorates Sylvester’s mathematical achievements.
