Knowra James Lind James Lind James Lind (1716–1794) was a Scottish naval surgeon whose 1747 comparison of scurvy treatments helped demonstrate the value of citrus fruits in preventing and treating the disease.
HMS Salisbury : A Royal Navy ship on which James Lind conducted his 1747 comparison of treatments for scurvy. Lind assigned twelve scurvy patients aboard this ship to six treatment groups.
Controlled experiment : An experiment that compares outcomes across groups treated differently while controlling relevant conditions. Lind’s patients received different treatments under broadly similar shipboard conditions.
Royal Navy : The United Kingdom’s naval warfare service, historically responsible for long-distance voyages and shipboard medical care. Lind served as a naval surgeon in the institution confronting scurvy at sea.
