James Prescott Joule

James Prescott Joule was an English physicist whose experiments established that mechanical work can be converted into heat in a fixed quantitative relation. His findings helped establish the conservation of energy and the first law of thermodynamics.

William Thomson: William Thomson, later Lord Kelvin, was a British physicist who helped develop thermodynamics and the absolute temperature scale. Thomson worked with Joule to investigate how gas expansion affects temperature.
Mechanical equivalent of heat: The amount of mechanical work equivalent to a specified quantity of heat. Joule measured this relationship by comparing mechanical work with the heat it produced.
