James Rainwater

James Rainwater was an American physicist whose nuclear model helped explain how some atomic nuclei deform from spherical shapes. He shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physics with Aage Bohr and Ben Mottelson.

Nuclear deformation: A departure of an atomic nucleus from spherical symmetry, often producing prolate or oblate shapes. Rainwater proposed that nucleons could make heavy nuclei deform rather than remain spherical.
