James Reese Europe

James Reese Europe (1881–1919) was an American bandleader, composer, and arranger who advanced Black concert music and popularized ragtime. He led the 369th Infantry Regiment band during World War I.

Noble Sissle: An American singer, lyricist, and bandleader who collaborated with James Reese Europe. Sissle sang with Europe’s orchestra and co-wrote songs that brought Black musical life to Broadway.
Clef Club: A New York organization of Black musicians that supplied performers and promoted professional opportunities. Europe helped establish it as a source of work and collective organization for Black musicians.
