James Watt

James Watt (1736–1819) was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer whose separate condenser and other improvements made steam engines substantially more fuel-efficient.

Watt steam engine: A steam engine incorporating James Watt’s efficiency improvements, especially a separate condenser. Its separate condenser kept the cylinder hot while steam condensed elsewhere, reducing wasted heat.
University of Glasgow: A Scottish university founded in 1451 and based in Glasgow. Its scientific instruments and academic community gave Watt access to people and ideas that shaped his work.
Rotative steam engine: A steam engine that delivers continuous rotary motion to machinery. Rotative engines let Watt’s design power mills and factories, not only pumps.
Watt: The SI unit of power, equal to one joule per second. The unit was named for Watt in recognition of his contributions to steam power.
Separate condenser: A vessel separate from a steam engine’s working cylinder where steam is condensed to create a vacuum. Watt’s separate condenser was his defining improvement to the Newcomen engine.
Joseph Black: A Scottish chemist and physicist known for research on heat, gases, and latent heat. Black’s studies of latent heat helped Watt understand why Newcomen engines consumed so much fuel.
Steam-powered textile manufacturing: The use of steam engines to drive machinery in textile production. Watt engines helped factories draw power independently of rivers and waterwheels.
Steam locomotive: A railway locomotive powered by a steam engine. Watt’s engines helped advance steam technology, though his own engines were not designed for locomotives.
Newcomen atmospheric engine: An early steam engine that raised water by condensing steam inside a cylinder and using atmospheric pressure. Watt’s condenser avoided repeatedly cooling and reheating the cylinder in this design.
Matthew Boulton: An English manufacturer and entrepreneur who partnered with James Watt to produce steam engines. Boulton supplied capital, manufacturing capacity, and commercial reach for Watt’s engine business.
