Jan Palach

Jan Palach was a Czech student who set himself on fire in Prague on 16 January 1969, protesting the Soviet-led suppression of the Prague Spring and public resignation to it.

Prague Spring: A 1968 Czechoslovak reform movement that sought “socialism with a human face” before Soviet-led forces ended it. Its suppression was the immediate political crisis Palach sought to confront.
Jan Zajíc: A Czech student who set himself on fire in Prague in February 1969 to protest political apathy after the invasion. Zajíc followed Palach’s example and became known as “Torch No. 2.”
