Jan Tschichold

Jan Tschichold (1902–1974) was a German typographer, book designer, and writer whose advocacy of modernist design and later work for Penguin Books shaped twentieth-century typography.

Asymmetric typography: A compositional method that arranges type and images without a central axis or mirrored balance. Tschichold used asymmetry to make modernist layouts feel dynamic and direct.
Elementare Typographie: A 1925 special issue of the German journal Typographische Mitteilungen that presented modernist typographic principles. Tschichold used it to introduce functional, asymmetrical typography to a wide German audience.
Leipzig: A city in eastern Germany with a longstanding tradition in printing, publishing, and book production. Tschichold trained and began his career in the German printing center.
