Jan van Riebeeck

Jan van Riebeeck was a Dutch East India Company official who established a refreshment station at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652, beginning the European settlement that became Cape Town.

Dutch East India Company: A Dutch chartered company that conducted trade and colonial activity in Asia from 1602 to 1799. The company appointed van Riebeeck to establish and manage the Cape station.
Refreshment station: A port facility where ships obtain fresh food, water, and supplies during a voyage. Van Riebeeck was tasked with making the Cape settlement serve this function.
