Janata Party

The Janata Party was an Indian political party formed in 1977 through the merger of groups that had opposed Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s Emergency. It led India’s first national government not headed by the Indian National Congress.

The Emergency (India): A period of emergency rule in India from 1975 to 1977, marked by suspended civil liberties and political repression. Opposition to the Emergency brought the party’s constituent groups together.
