Jane Goodall

Jane Goodall is an English primatologist and conservationist whose decades of research on wild chimpanzees at Gombe Stream transformed the study of animal behavior and public understanding of conservation.

Gombe Stream National Park: A protected area in western Tanzania where Jane Goodall conducted long-term research on wild chimpanzees. Goodall’s fieldwork there began in 1960 and established the setting for her landmark observations.
Habituation: A gradual reduction in an animal’s fear or avoidance response after repeated, non-threatening exposure. Goodall’s team habituated chimpanzees so they could observe natural behavior at close range.
Louis Leakey: A Kenyan-British archaeologist and paleoanthropologist who promoted research on human origins in Africa. Leakey recruited Goodall for chimpanzee research and helped secure the opportunity to study at Gombe.
Hugo van Lawick: A Dutch wildlife photographer and filmmaker who documented animals in Africa. Van Lawick filmed Goodall’s Gombe research and produced widely seen documentaries about chimpanzees.
Anthropomorphism: The attribution of human characteristics, emotions, or intentions to nonhuman beings or objects. Goodall’s use of individual names and emotional descriptions drew criticism over scientific objectivity.
David Greybeard: A wild male chimpanzee studied by Jane Goodall at Gombe who became the first she named. His termite-fishing behavior helped reveal that chimpanzees make and use tools.
Participant observation: A research method in which an investigator studies a group through sustained presence in its everyday setting. Long stays at Gombe let Goodall learn chimpanzees’ routines, relationships, and individual differences.
Leakey's angels: A group of women researchers recruited by Louis Leakey to study great apes in Africa. Goodall was the first of Leakey’s prominent female field researchers, alongside Dian Fossey and Birutė Galdikas.
Dale Peterson: An American writer and scholar who has collaborated on books about primates and conservation. Peterson coauthored Goodall’s memoirs and helped bring her field experiences to a broad audience.
Anthropocentrism: The view that human interests, experiences, or capacities are central or uniquely significant. Chimpanzee tool use and social complexity challenged assumptions separating humans from other animals.
