Jangsu of Goguryeo

Jangsu was the twentieth king of Goguryeo, ruling from 413 to 491. He moved the capital to Pyongyang and extended Goguryeo’s power across much of the Korean peninsula and Manchuria.

Pyongyang: A city on the Taedong River that has served as a capital of Korea across several historical periods. Jangsu moved Goguryeo’s capital here, redirecting the kingdom’s political center southward.
Goguryeo–Wei War: A series of conflicts between Goguryeo and the Chinese state of Wei in the third century. Earlier resistance to Chinese invasions formed a precedent for Goguryeo’s frontier strategy.
Gwanggaeto Stele: A monumental inscription erected in 414 near the tomb of King Gwanggaeto of Goguryeo. Erected soon after Jangsu’s accession, it records his father’s deeds and the dynasty’s claims.
Jangsu's move of the capital to Pyongyang: The relocation of Goguryeo’s capital from the Ji'an region to Pyongyang during Jangsu’s reign. This defining decision strengthened Goguryeo’s position in the southern part of its realm.
Gwanggaeto the Great: A Goguryeo king who ruled from 391 to 413 and greatly expanded the kingdom’s territory. Jangsu inherited the powerful kingdom built by his father and continued its expansion.
Goguryeo–Sui War: A series of wars between Goguryeo and the Sui dynasty from 598 to 614. These later wars show the enduring strategic pressures facing the kingdom Jangsu strengthened.
Goguryeo royal succession: The transfer of kingship within Goguryeo’s ruling house across successive reigns. Jangsu’s accession continued the royal line after Gwanggaeto’s death in 413.
Ji'an: A city in Jilin, China, near the Yalu River and the former Goguryeo capital of Gungnae. The city’s monuments and remains preserve evidence of the kingdom before its capital moved.
Goguryeo: An ancient Korean kingdom that ruled parts of the Korean peninsula and Manchuria from 37 BCE to 668 CE. Jangsu’s reign was a high point in this kingdom’s territorial reach and regional influence.
Goguryeo tomb murals: Painted scenes in Goguryeo tombs depicting daily life, beliefs, and elite culture. Tombs from the kingdom’s period of growth preserve evidence of its society and cultural reach.
