Janjaweed

Janjaweed is a name commonly applied to Sudanese Arab militia forces that fought alongside government forces in Darfur during the 2000s. The label covered varied armed groups rather than one unified organization.

Darfur conflict: A series of armed conflicts in western Sudan, especially the rebellion and counterinsurgency that began in 2003. The Janjaweed became prominent within this conflict’s government-backed campaign against rebel groups.
Sudanese Armed Forces: Sudan’s national military, responsible for the country’s conventional armed forces. Janjaweed fighters operated alongside government troops and benefited from state support.
Darfur genocide: The mass killing and persecution of non-Arab communities in Darfur, particularly during the early years of the war. Janjaweed forces were implicated in atrocities underlying genocide findings and allegations.
Sudan Liberation Army: The armed wing associated with the Sudan Liberation Movement, a rebel organization in Darfur. Unlike the government-aligned Janjaweed, it fought Sudanese forces and their allied militias.
Command responsibility: A form of criminal liability for commanders who fail to prevent or punish crimes by forces under their control. Attributing militia crimes requires evidence about who commanded particular forces and knew of their actions.

Sudan Revolutionary Front: An alliance of Sudanese rebel movements, including groups from Darfur and the Two Areas. It united opposition forces rather than serving as a government-aligned militia network.
Genocide denial: The rejection or minimization of established evidence that genocide occurred. Disputes over Darfur’s classification have shaped debates about the violence attributed to Janjaweed forces.
