János Bolyai

János Bolyai (1802–1860) was a Hungarian mathematician who independently developed hyperbolic geometry, showing that Euclid’s parallel postulate need not hold.

Euclidean geometry: The geometry described by Euclid’s postulates, including the parallel postulate. Bolyai’s work departed from this geometric system by rejecting its parallel postulate.
Farkas Bolyai: A Hungarian mathematician and educator who was János Bolyai’s father. Farkas urged his son not to pursue the parallel problem, then transmitted his work to Gauss.
Nikolai Lobachevsky: A Russian mathematician who independently developed hyperbolic geometry in the 1820s and 1830s. His independent discovery paralleled Bolyai’s, though their work emerged in different settings.
Non-Euclidean geometry: Any geometry that differs from Euclidean geometry by changing its parallel postulate or other foundational assumptions. Bolyai’s work became one of the foundational developments in this broader family.
Parallel postulate: Euclid’s postulate stating that exactly one parallel can be drawn through a point outside a given line. Bolyai investigated what geometry follows when this postulate is replaced.
University of Göttingen: A German university that became a major center of mathematics and science. János’s father studied mathematics there and formed a lasting connection with Gauss.
Bernhard Riemann: A German mathematician whose work broadened geometry to spaces with varying curvature. Riemann later extended the transformation of geometry that Bolyai and Lobachevsky began.
Consistency of non-Euclidean geometry: The question of whether non-Euclidean geometries contain contradictions under their axioms. Bolyai’s construction raised the issue later models addressed by interpreting hyperbolic geometry within Euclidean geometry.
Hyperbolic geometry: A geometry in which multiple lines through a point can be parallel to a given line. This is the non-Euclidean geometry Bolyai independently developed.
Imperial and Royal Military Academy: A military engineering academy in Vienna where János Bolyai studied. Bolyai trained there before serving as an army engineer and pursuing mathematics.
