January 6 Dictatorship

The royal dictatorship King Alexander I established in Yugoslavia on January 6, 1929, suspending the constitution, dissolving parliament, and banning political parties.

6 January Proclamation: Alexander I’s 1929 decree that suspended Yugoslavia’s constitution and concentrated state power in the crown. This proclamation formally began the dictatorship and supplied its legal basis.
Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes: The South Slavic kingdom established in 1918 and renamed Yugoslavia in 1929. The dictatorship arose from conflicts within this state’s parliamentary system.
