Japan Railways Group

Japan Railways Group is a set of passenger and freight railway companies created in 1987 from the breakup and privatization of Japanese National Railways.

Japanese National Railways: Japan’s state-owned railway corporation operated the country’s railways from 1949 until its breakup in 1987. The group’s companies inherited routes, assets, and operations from this corporation.
Japan National Railways Settlement Corporation: A public corporation established to manage Japanese National Railways’ assets and liabilities after its 1987 breakup. It handled debts and property left outside the newly formed railway companies.
Tokaido Shinkansen: A high-speed railway line connecting Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, and Osaka. JR Central operates this heavily used route and derives much of its business from it.
Tokyo Metro: A private railway company operating nine subway lines in central Tokyo. It is a major urban operator outside the JR Group, despite serving the same metropolitan market.
JR East: A passenger railway company operating mainly in eastern Japan, including Tokyo and the Tohoku region. It is the largest passenger operator in the group by revenue and serves Tokyo.
Japanese National Railways privatization: The 1987 restructuring that divided Japanese National Railways into regional passenger companies and a nationwide freight company. It created the corporate framework that defines the group.
Sanyo Shinkansen: A high-speed railway line linking Osaka with western Honshu and Hakata in Fukuoka. JR West operates the line as a core intercity passenger service.
Japanese private railways: Railway companies in Japan that operate outside the Japan Railways Group, often combining rail and property businesses. Their independent ownership and integrated businesses contrast with the JR companies’ shared origin.
JR Central: A passenger railway company operating mainly in central Japan, including the Tokaido Shinkansen. Its high-speed line between Tokyo and Osaka is a defining group service.
Japanese railway nationalization: The early twentieth-century process through which the Japanese government acquired major private railway lines. Earlier state consolidation preceded the national railway corporation that was later split up.
