Japanese Alps

The Japanese Alps are the collective name for the Hida, Kiso, and Akaishi mountain ranges in central Honshu. Their high peaks, deep valleys, and snow-heavy climate shape the region’s landscapes and settlements.

Hida Mountains: A mountain range in central Honshu, also called the Northern Alps, with many of Japan’s highest peaks. The northernmost range gives the Japanese Alps their highest concentration of prominent peaks.
Japanese island arc: A curved chain of islands formed where oceanic plates descend beneath and interact with the margins of continental plates. The Alps’ uplift is part of the tectonic activity that built the Japanese archipelago.
Chūbu-Sangaku National Park: A national park in central Honshu protecting much of the Hida Mountains and surrounding landscapes. It safeguards the Northern Alps’ dramatic peaks and alpine ecosystems.
Walter Weston: A British missionary and mountaineer whose writings helped introduce Japan’s mountains to Western audiences. His accounts helped popularize the name and image of the Japanese Alps.
Kiso Mountains: A mountain range in central Honshu, also called the Central Alps, between the Kiso and Tenryū river valleys. This range forms the central member of the three ranges grouped as the Japanese Alps.
Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line: A major geological boundary crossing central Japan from the Japan Sea toward Suruga Bay. It marks a major structural division near the western and eastern sides of the Alpine region.
Minami Alps National Park: A national park protecting high mountains and watersheds in the Akaishi range of central Honshu. It preserves much of the Southern Alps’ remote mountain environment.
Japanese mountaineering: The practice and cultural tradition of climbing mountains in Japan. The Japanese Alps became a central setting for modern climbing and mountain tourism.
Akaishi Mountains: A mountain range in central Honshu, also called the Southern Alps, extending across Nagano, Yamanashi, and Shizuoka prefectures. Its southern peaks complete the three-range grouping.
Fossa Magna: A broad geological zone of subsidence and deformation in central Honshu, filled with younger rocks and sediments. Its tectonic setting helps explain the complex geology surrounding the Japanese Alps.
