Japanese imperialism

Japanese imperialism was Japan’s expansion of political and military control over Asian territories from the late nineteenth century through 1945, driven by strategic, economic, and ideological aims.

First Sino-Japanese War: The 1894–1895 war between Qing China and Japan over influence in Korea, ending in Japan’s victory. Its victory brought Taiwan under Japanese rule and accelerated regional expansion.
Meiji Restoration: The 1868 political transformation that restored imperial rule and launched Japan’s rapid state-building and modernization. Its centralized state and modern armed forces made overseas expansion possible.
Itō Hirobumi: A Japanese statesman who helped draft the Meiji Constitution and served as prime minister and resident-general in Korea. His roles connected Japan’s constitutional state-building with its growing control over Korea.
Nanjing Massacre: The mass killing and abuse of civilians and prisoners by Japanese troops after capturing Nanjing in December 1937. It stands among the gravest atrocities committed during Japan’s war in China.
Western imperialism: The political and economic domination of overseas territories by European powers and the United States. Japan adopted imperial practices while also presenting itself as a challenger to Western rule.
Russo-Japanese War: The 1904–1905 war between Russia and Japan, fought over influence in Manchuria and Korea. Victory strengthened Japan’s position in Korea and southern Manchuria.
Meiji Constitution: Japan’s 1889 constitution, which established a constitutional monarchy and defined institutions of imperial government. Its political structure placed the armed forces close to imperial authority.
Tōgō Heihachirō: A Japanese admiral who commanded the fleet that defeated Russia at the Battle of Tsushima in 1905. His victory made naval power a decisive instrument of Japanese expansion.
Comfort women: Women and girls coerced or deceived into sexual labor at military brothels operated for Japan’s armed forces. The system exposed the gendered violence embedded in Japan’s wartime occupation.
Pan-Asianism: A set of ideas advocating solidarity among Asian peoples, often against Western imperial power. Japanese leaders invoked Asian unity while subordinating neighboring peoples to Japanese rule.
