Japanese invasion of Manchuria

Japan’s military occupation of Manchuria began after the 1931 Mukden Incident and led to the establishment of the puppet state Manchukuo.

Mukden Incident: A 1931 explosion on a Japanese-owned railway near Mukden, used by Japan’s Kwantung Army to justify military action. The incident supplied the pretext for the invasion.
Stimson Doctrine: The 1932 U.S. policy of refusing to recognize territorial changes achieved through aggression. It expressed diplomatic nonrecognition of Japan’s gains in Manchuria.
Russo-Japanese War: The 1904–1905 war between Japan and Russia over influence in Korea and Manchuria. Japan’s victory secured interests in southern Manchuria that later underpinned its presence.
Tanggu Truce: A 1933 armistice between China and Japan that ended major fighting in northeastern China and established a demilitarized zone. The agreement formalized a pause after Japan had secured Manchuria.
Kwantung Army: The Imperial Japanese Army force stationed in and around the Kwantung Leased Territory in southern Manchuria. Its officers initiated operations and expanded them beyond civilian-government orders.
Japan's withdrawal from the League of Nations: Japan’s 1933 departure from the League of Nations after the League rejected its position on Manchuria. The dispute over the occupation helped drive Japan away from the League.
South Manchuria Railway: A Japanese-operated railway company that controlled railways and associated economic interests in southern Manchuria. Its railway and surrounding assets were central to Japan’s strategic foothold.
Xi'an Incident: A 1936 seizure of Chiang Kai-shek by Chinese commanders, who sought a united front against Japan. It illustrates how the threat from Japan altered Chinese political priorities.
Manchukuo: A Japanese-controlled state established in Manchuria in 1932, with Puyi as its nominal chief executive and emperor. Occupation was consolidated through this dependent state.
Second Sino-Japanese War: A war between China and Japan that began in 1937 and became a major theater of World War II. Manchuria’s occupation preceded and helped prepare the expansion of war in China.
