Japanese invasion of Taiwan

The 1895 campaign in which Japan occupied Taiwan after the Qing dynasty ceded the island under the Treaty of Shimonoseki, meeting armed resistance from local forces.

Treaty of Shimonoseki: The 1895 treaty that ended the First Sino-Japanese War and ceded Taiwan and the Pescadores to Japan. Its cession of Taiwan supplied the formal basis for Japan’s occupation.
First Sino-Japanese War: The 1894–1895 war between Qing China and Japan over influence in Korea. Japan’s victory created the conditions for the cession of Taiwan.

Battle of Baguashan: An August 1895 battle near Changhua, among the largest engagements of Japan’s invasion of Taiwan. Its outcome helped Japanese forces advance toward central Taiwan.
Japanese Taiwan expedition of 1874: A Japanese military expedition to southern Taiwan in 1874, prompted by the killing of Ryukyuan castaways. It was an earlier Japanese intervention on Taiwan, decades before the 1895 occupation.
