Japanese militarism

A political and military movement that expanded the armed forces’ influence in Japan before and during the Second World War, helping drive imperial expansion and war.

Meiji Constitution: Japan’s 1889 constitution established a constitutional monarchy and granted the military direct authority to advise the emperor. Direct access to the emperor helped army and navy leaders evade civilian cabinet control.
Meiji Restoration: The political transformation beginning in 1868 that restored imperial rule and accelerated Japan’s centralization and modernization. The new state built conscription, industry, and imperial institutions later used by militarists.
Sadao Araki: A Japanese army general and political figure associated with ultranationalist ideas and the Imperial Way faction. As army minister, he promoted education and policy aligned with military-centered nationalism.
Japanese invasion of Manchuria: The 1931 seizure of Manchuria by the Japanese Kwantung Army, followed by the creation of Manchukuo. The army’s action without prior cabinet approval demonstrated its growing autonomy.
Taishō democracy: A period of expanded party politics, mass participation, and parliamentary influence in Japan, especially from the 1910s to the early 1920s. Its party-led politics provide a contrast with the later erosion of civilian authority.
Imperial Japanese Army: Japan’s land-based armed service from the Meiji era through its defeat in 1945. Its leaders drove continental expansion and gained influence over national policy.
State Shinto: A state-sponsored system that organized shrine worship and linked imperial loyalty with public life in modern Japan. Its institutions promoted emperor-centered loyalty that militarists drew on.
Hideki Tojo: A Japanese army general who served as prime minister from 1941 to 1944 during the Pacific War. His premiership concentrated wartime government leadership in a prominent army figure.
Second Sino-Japanese War: The large-scale war between Japan and China that began in 1937 and continued until Japan’s surrender in 1945. The prolonged conflict expanded military control and consumed national resources.
Japanese parliamentary system: Japan’s constitutional system of elected representatives, political parties, and cabinets operating under the emperor. Its weakening shows how military influence displaced representative political competition.
