Japanese pacifism

Japanese pacifism is a political tradition opposing war and favoring limits on military power, shaped especially by Japan’s wartime defeat, postwar occupation, and constitutional order.

Pacific War: The 1941–1945 war between Japan and the Allied powers in the Pacific and Asia. Defeat in this war made military restraint a central postwar political concern.
Self-Defense Forces: Japan’s armed organization, established in 1954 and officially limited to self-defense. Their existence exposes the practical tension between constitutional renunciation and national defense.
Shigeru Yoshida: Japan’s prime minister for much of the early postwar period, associated with economic recovery and limited defense commitments. His security strategy institutionalized restraint without requiring complete military neutrality.
Japanese antimilitarism: Opposition in Japan to military institutions, military influence, or militarized politics. Antimilitarism overlaps with pacifism but can criticize military power more broadly.

Ichiro Hatoyama: A Japanese prime minister who advocated constitutional revision and a more autonomous defense policy. His agenda represented an early conservative challenge to postwar pacifist constraints.
Japanese nationalism: Political movements and ideas that emphasize Japanese national identity, sovereignty, or national interests. Nationalist arguments can challenge restraints framed as limits on sovereign defense.
Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution: The constitutional provision renouncing war and restricting Japan’s use of military force. Its wording became the central legal expression of postwar pacifism.
Japan–United States Security Treaty: The treaty framework under which the United States provides for Japan’s security and maintains forces there. The alliance made a low-profile Japanese defense posture more feasible.
