Japonisme

Japonisme is the influence of Japanese art and design on Western artists, designers, and collectors, especially after Japan opened to international trade in the mid-19th century.

Ukiyo-e: A genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings depicting urban life, theater, landscapes, and other subjects. Its prints supplied Western artists with striking examples of flattened space, cropping, and everyday subjects.
Opening of Japan: The mid-19th-century end of Japan's restricted foreign relations and expansion of its international trade. New access to Japanese goods made sustained Western interest possible.
James McNeill Whistler: An American-born artist active in Britain whose paintings and interiors drew on Japanese art. His paintings and Peacock Room show Japonisme across fine art and interior design.
The Peacock Room: James McNeill Whistler's elaborately decorated dining room, completed in London in 1877. Its Japanese-inspired ornament shows Japonisme reshaping an entire interior.
Impressionism: A 19th-century art movement associated with visible brushwork, modern subjects, and effects of light. Japanese prints reinforced compositional experiments among several Impressionist artists.
Japonaiserie: The use or imitation of Japanese motifs and objects in Western art and design. It names the decorative adoption of Japanese imagery that accompanied deeper artistic influence.
Convention of Kanagawa: The 1854 agreement that opened Japanese ports to American ships and established diplomatic relations. It marked a turning point in the foreign access that accelerated Japanese exports.
Vincent van Gogh: A Dutch painter whose work included copies of Japanese prints and adaptations of their visual style. His engagement with ukiyo-e made Japanese influence explicit in both his art and letters.
La Japonaise: Claude Monet's 1876 portrait of Camille Doncieux wearing a Japanese robe against a fan-covered wall. The painting turns Japanese costume and objects into a conspicuous Western subject.
Art Nouveau: An international decorative style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for flowing lines and organic forms. Japonisme contributed motifs and design ideas to Art Nouveau's decorative language.
