Knowra Jarosite Jarosite Jarosite is a yellow to brown potassium iron sulfate mineral with the formula KFe₃(SO₄)₂(OH)₆. It forms where iron sulfides or other iron-bearing materials weather under acidic, oxidizing conditions.
Sulfate mineral : A mineral whose structure contains sulfate groups, SO₄²⁻. Jarosite belongs to this mineral class because sulfate groups are essential parts of its structure.
Acid mine drainage : Acidic, metal-rich water produced when sulfide minerals oxidize after exposure to air and water. Jarosite commonly precipitates from the acidic, iron-rich waters generated by mine waste.
Acid mine drainage treatment : Methods for reducing acidity and contaminant loads in water draining from mines. Jarosite precipitation can remove iron and some trace metals, but may later release them if conditions change.
Natrojarosite : A sodium-dominant jarosite-group mineral with the formula NaFe₃(SO₄)₂(OH)₆. It replaces jarosite’s potassium with sodium while retaining the same basic structure.
Alunite supergroup : A mineral supergroup of sulfate and phosphate minerals sharing related crystal structures. Jarosite is a member, sharing the group’s characteristic structure and sites for different cations.
Pyrite : An iron sulfide mineral with the formula FeS₂. Oxidation of pyrite can supply the acidity, sulfate, and iron needed for jarosite formation.
Geochemical indicator : A mineral or chemical feature used to infer the conditions of a geological environment. Jarosite’s presence indicates strongly acidic, oxidizing conditions during formation or alteration.
Hydronium jarosite : A jarosite-group mineral in which hydronium ions occupy the large-cation site. It shows that hydronium can substitute for potassium in jarosite-like minerals.
Hydroxysulfate : A mineral compound containing both sulfate groups and hydroxide groups. Jarosite incorporates sulfate and hydroxide in the same crystal structure.
Oxidation : A chemical process involving electron loss, often accompanied by increased oxidation state. Oxidation converts dissolved iron into Fe³⁺, a key ingredient in jarosite precipitation.
