Java Man

Java Man is a collection of Homo erectus fossils discovered on Java, Indonesia, by Eugène Dubois in the 1890s. The finds helped establish that humans evolved in Asia as well as Europe.

Eugène Dubois: A Dutch physician and anatomist who discovered Homo erectus fossils on Java in the 1890s. He led the expedition that found the fossils and named Pithecanthropus erectus.
Fossil: Preserved remains, traces, or impressions of organisms from the geological past. Java Man is known through fossilized bones recovered from ancient deposits.
Out of Africa theory: The broad account that modern humans originated in Africa and later dispersed across the world. Java Man informed earlier debates about human origins, distinct from modern human origins.
Trinil 2: A Homo erectus skullcap discovered by Eugène Dubois at Trinil in 1891. This specimen is the type specimen associated with Pithecanthropus erectus.

Fossil association: The inference that fossils found together belonged to the same organism, population, or time period. Whether Dubois’s skullcap and femur belonged together affects interpretation of Java Man.
