Javelin throw

Javelin throw is a track-and-field event in which athletes throw a spear-like implement for distance from a runway. A valid throw must land tip-first within a marked sector.

Javelin: A slender throwing implement with a pointed metal head, cord grip, and shaft, used in the javelin throw. Its design governs grip, flight, and the requirement to land tip-first.
Javelin throw runway: The straight, bounded approach area from which a javelin is thrown. It sets the athlete’s approach path and the boundary behind which the throw must begin.
Jan Železný: A Czech javelin thrower who set the men’s world record of 98.48 metres in 1996. His world record remains the benchmark for elite men’s throwing.
Shot put: A track-and-field event in which athletes put a heavy metal ball for distance from a circle. Unlike javelin, shot put uses a pushing action from a circle rather than a runway throw.
Run-up: An athlete’s approach along a runway before releasing a throwing implement or taking off. Javelin throwers build speed on the runway before entering the delivery stride.
Javelin throw sector: The marked landing area within which a javelin must fall for a valid attempt. A throw outside its angular boundaries does not count.
Barbora Špotáková: A Czech javelin thrower who set the women’s world record of 72.28 metres in 2008. Her record marks the current peak of the women’s event.
Discus throw: A track-and-field event in which athletes throw a flat, circular disc for distance. Its rotating disc and throwing circle create different release mechanics and flight.
Javelin throw technique: The sequence of movements used to accelerate and release a javelin for distance. Its transition from approach to delivery converts controlled speed into a throw.
Throwing distance: The measured distance from a throwing line or arc to the nearest landing point of an implement. Javelin results are measured from the arc to the first point of impact.
