Je Tsongkhapa

Je Tsongkhapa (1357–1419) was a Tibetan Buddhist scholar and teacher who founded the Gelug school and established Ganden Monastery. His writings systematized Madhyamaka philosophy and the Tibetan path to enlightenment.

Madhyamaka: A Buddhist philosophical tradition that analyzes phenomena as empty of inherent existence. Its account of emptiness underpins Tsongkhapa’s philosophical works.
Gelug: A Tibetan Buddhist school founded by Tsongkhapa, known for monastic scholarship and the study of Madhyamaka. The school institutionalized his teachings and educational approach.
Amdo: A historical region of northeastern Tibet, now divided among several Chinese provincial-level areas. Tsongkhapa was born in Amdo and received his earliest Buddhist education there.
Dalai Lama: The title of the spiritual leaders of the Gelug school who became Tibet’s most prominent political leaders from the 17th century. The Dalai Lama lineage later became closely associated with the Gelug tradition Tsongkhapa founded.
Prāsaṅgika: A Madhyamaka approach that uses consequences of an opponent’s claims to expose contradictions. Tsongkhapa made this approach central to his interpretation of Madhyamaka.
Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path: Tsongkhapa’s comprehensive presentation of the stages of the Buddhist path to enlightenment. It shows how he arranged ethical, meditative, and wisdom practices into a graded path.
Ganden Monastery: A Tibetan Buddhist monastery founded by Tsongkhapa in 1409 near Lhasa. It became the first major institutional center of the Gelug school.
Panchen Lama: A major Gelug lineage of Tibetan Buddhist teachers traditionally associated with Tashilhunpo Monastery. The Panchen Lama lineage is another prominent institution within the school Tsongkhapa established.
Śūnyatā: The Buddhist teaching that phenomena lack independent, inherent existence. Tsongkhapa explains emptiness while insisting it does not negate conventional reality.
Great Treatise on the Stages of the Mantra: Tsongkhapa’s systematic account of Vajrayana practice and its stages. It applies his structured approach to tantric practice.
