Jean-Baptiste Biot

Jean-Baptiste Biot (1774–1862) was a French physicist, astronomer, and mathematician whose work included magnetism, optics, and the polarization of light.

François Arago: François Arago was a French physicist, astronomer, and politician who studied optics and magnetism. Biot and Arago jointly investigated the magnetic effects of electric current.
Biot–Savart law: The law gives the magnetic field produced by a steady electric current in terms of its current elements. Biot and Savart formulated this relation from experiments on current-generated magnetism.
Polarimetry: Polarimetry measures the rotation or other polarization properties of light after interaction with a sample. Biot’s measurements of optical rotation helped establish this method for analyzing substances.
French Academy of Sciences: The French Academy of Sciences is a learned society founded in 1666 to advance scientific research. Biot became a member, gaining a central institutional role in French science.
Augustin-Jean Fresnel: Augustin-Jean Fresnel was a French engineer and physicist who developed a wave theory of light. Fresnel’s account of polarized light challenged and extended ideas Biot had developed.
Optical rotation: Optical rotation is the rotation of linearly polarized light as it passes through an optically active material. Biot measured how substances such as sugar solutions rotate the plane of polarized light.
Saccharimetry: Saccharimetry estimates sugar concentration by measuring a solution’s optical rotation. Biot’s studies of sugar solutions linked optical rotation to concentration and path length.
Society of Arcueil: The Society of Arcueil was an influential scientific circle active in France in the early nineteenth century. Biot participated in its collaborative culture of experiment and mathematical analysis.
André-Marie Ampère: André-Marie Ampère was a French physicist and mathematician who founded electrodynamics. Ampère’s theory of currents provided a different framework for interpreting their magnetic effects.
Circular birefringence: Circular birefringence is the difference in refractive index experienced by left- and right-circularly polarized light. It provides a wave-based account of the optical rotation Biot measured.
