Jean-François Champollion

Jean-François Champollion (1790–1832) was a French scholar who deciphered Egyptian hieroglyphs, showing that the script combined phonetic signs with other kinds of signs.

Demotic: The cursive script used for everyday writing in ancient Egypt during the later first millennium BCE and afterward. Champollion compared its signs and language with hieroglyphic and Greek versions of the Rosetta decree.
Coptic language: The latest historical stage of the Egyptian language, written mainly with a Greek-based alphabet and additional signs. Champollion’s command of Coptic supplied crucial evidence for the language behind hieroglyphic texts.
Jacques-Joseph Champollion-Figeac: A French scholar and Jean-François Champollion’s elder brother, who supported and publicized his research. He assisted with the publication and defense of his younger brother’s decipherment.
