Jean-François Lyotard

Jean-François Lyotard (1924–1998) was a French philosopher whose work examined knowledge, language, art, and political justice. He is best known for describing postmodernity as distrust of grand narratives.

Metanarrative: A broad story that legitimizes knowledge or social institutions by explaining history and progress. Lyotard’s account of postmodernity centers on declining belief in such legitimating stories.
