Jean-François Millet

Jean-François Millet was a French painter (1814–1875) associated with the Barbizon school. His paintings, including The Gleaners, made rural laborers central subjects.

The Gleaners: An 1857 painting by Millet depicting three women gathering leftover grain after a harvest. Its monumental treatment of gleaning became Millet’s best-known image of rural poverty.
Gruchy: A hamlet in Normandy where Millet was born in 1814. Its farming community supplied the rural life that remained central to his art.
