Jean-Luc Nancy

Jean-Luc Nancy (1940–2021) was a French philosopher whose work examined being-with, embodied existence, community, and the limits of individual identity.

Being-with: The condition in which existence is intrinsically shared with others rather than formed by isolated individuals. Nancy makes being-with the starting point for thinking about community and singular existence.
The Inoperative Community: Nancy’s account of community as an exposure among singular beings, not a completed work or shared substance. It sets out how community exists without a unified identity or collective project.
Martin Heidegger: A German philosopher whose analysis of being and existence shaped twentieth-century continental philosophy. Nancy’s account of being-with develops through a sustained reinterpretation of Heidegger.
