Jean-Victor Poncelet

Jean-Victor Poncelet (1788–1867) was a French mathematician whose work helped revive projective geometry. His Traité des propriétés projectives des figures developed the study of geometric properties preserved by projection.

Projective geometry: The study of geometric properties preserved under projection, such as incidence and cross-ratio. It is the field Poncelet helped restore and develop.
Pole and polar: A point-line correspondence defined by a conic, relating each point to its polar line and each line to its pole. Poncelet used pole-polar relations to organize properties of conics.
