Jebel Akhdar War

The 1950s conflict between the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman and the Imamate of Oman, ending in 1959 when the Sultan’s forces captured the Imamate’s mountain stronghold.

Jebel Akhdar: A mountain massif in northern Oman, rising above the surrounding plateau and containing steep, defensible terrain. Its high plateau and difficult approaches made it the Imamate’s principal stronghold.
Imamate of Oman: A political and religious institution in Oman in which an elected imam exercised authority over the interior. Its claim to rule the interior put it in conflict with the Sultanate.
Omani Civil War (1970–1976): A conflict in Oman between the government and a leftist insurgency in Dhofar, lasting from 1970 to 1976. The Sultanate’s consolidation after the Jebel Akhdar War preceded later conflict over state authority.
Tanuf: A village and oasis in Oman’s Ad Dakhiliyah region, near Nizwa and the Jebel Akhdar massif. Fighting around Tanuf formed part of the struggle for access to the mountain.
Said bin Taimur: Sultan of Muscat and Oman from 1932 to 1970, whose rule faced armed opposition from the Imamate. His government sought to reassert authority over the interior of Oman.
Sultanate of Muscat and Oman: The state ruled by the sultan of Muscat before the modern Sultanate of Oman was established. Its rulers asserted sovereignty over the interior contested by the Imamate.
Qaboos bin Said: Sultan of Oman from 1970 to 2020, who overthrew his father and led a program of state modernization. His accession followed the war and the end of his father’s rule.
Jebel Akhdar campaign (1957–1959): The Sultanate’s military campaign to retake the Jebel Akhdar from Imamate forces. This final campaign culminated in the capture of the Imamate’s stronghold.
Ghalib bin Ali al-Hinai: The last elected imam of Oman, who led the Imamate during its conflict with the Sultanate. His forces defended the Imamate’s position in the Jebel Akhdar.
Treaty of Seeb: A 1920 agreement between the Sultan of Muscat and the Imam of Oman that limited the Sultan’s authority in the interior. The agreement paused fighting but left competing interpretations of sovereignty.
