Jerry Goldsmith

Jerry Goldsmith (1929–2004) was an American composer and conductor whose film and television scores combined orchestral writing with unconventional sounds and techniques.

The Omen: A 1976 horror film directed by Richard Donner, scored by Jerry Goldsmith. Goldsmith won his only Academy Award for the film’s choral score, including “Ave Satani.”
Orchestration: The arrangement of musical parts for instruments and voices in an ensemble. Goldsmith’s inventive combinations of instruments made familiar orchestras sound unfamiliar.
Alex North: An American composer known for film scores including A Streetcar Named Desire and Spartacus. North’s modernist film music helped establish a path Goldsmith also pursued in Hollywood.

Prepared piano: A piano whose sound is altered by objects placed on or between its strings. He used altered piano sounds in Planet of the Apes to suggest an unfamiliar civilization.
Alfred Newman: An American film composer and conductor who led the music department at 20th Century Fox. Goldsmith worked under Newman at Fox early in his career.
University of Southern California: A private research university in Los Angeles, California. Goldsmith studied composition there with Miklós Rózsa.
Grammy Award for Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special: A Grammy category recognizing original scores written for film or television. Goldsmith won the award for The Omen, one of several major honors for his scoring.
