Jet engine

A reaction engine that produces thrust by accelerating and ejecting gas. Aircraft jet engines usually draw in air, compress it, add heat through fuel combustion, and expel it through a nozzle.

Brayton cycle: A thermodynamic cycle of compression, heat addition, expansion, and heat rejection used to model gas turbines. It describes the idealized cycle followed by the engine’s working gas.
Thrust: A force that propels a body in a chosen direction. It is the output that an aircraft engine must deliver.
Turbofan: A gas-turbine engine in which a fan sends some air around the engine core and some through it. Its bypass airflow makes it the dominant architecture for modern airliners.
Aircraft propulsion: The methods and systems that generate force to move an aircraft through the air. Jet engines are one major family of systems used to propel aircraft.
Frank Whittle: A British engineer and Royal Air Force officer who developed and patented a turbojet design in the 1930s. His work helped establish the practical British jet-engine program.
Compressor: A machine that raises a gas’s pressure by adding mechanical energy. It increases incoming air pressure before combustion.
Momentum: A physical quantity equal to an object's mass multiplied by its velocity. Changing the airflow’s momentum produces a force on the engine.
Turbojet: A gas-turbine engine that produces thrust primarily by accelerating its core exhaust. It is the simplest common air-breathing jet architecture and a useful baseline.
Commercial aviation: The operation of aircraft to transport passengers or cargo for commercial purposes. High-bypass turbofans power most long-distance passenger and cargo aircraft.
Hans von Ohain: A German engineer who designed the engine that powered the first turbojet aircraft flight. His engine powered the Heinkel He 178’s first flight in 1939.
