Jet fuel

Jet fuel is a liquid fuel used in aircraft turbine engines, usually a kerosene-based petroleum product formulated to meet aviation performance and safety standards.

Kerosene: A combustible liquid hydrocarbon mixture refined chiefly from petroleum and used as fuel and solvent. Jet fuel is generally a tightly specified aviation-grade kerosene.
Gas turbine: An engine that compresses air, burns fuel in it, and extracts energy from the hot expanding gas. Jet fuel releases energy in the combustor of this engine type.
Jet A: A kerosene-type aviation turbine fuel used mainly in the United States. It is the principal civil jet-fuel grade in the United States.
Aviation emissions: Pollutants and greenhouse gases released by aircraft operations and their supporting activities. Burning jet fuel releases carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other combustion products.
Hydrocarbon: A chemical compound composed only of hydrogen and carbon atoms. Jet fuel’s energy and physical properties come from its hydrocarbon molecules.
Jet engine: A reaction engine that produces thrust by accelerating a stream of gas. Jet fuel powers the combustion cycle that produces thrust.
Jet A-1: A kerosene-type aviation turbine fuel used internationally, with a lower freezing-point limit than Jet A. Its low-temperature specification supports widespread international airline operations.
Contrails: Cloud-like ice-crystal trails formed when aircraft exhaust meets sufficiently cold, humid air. Water vapor from jet-fuel combustion helps form contrails under suitable atmospheric conditions.
Aviation fuel: Fuel intended for use in aircraft engines. Jet fuel is the turbine-engine branch of this broader fuel category.
Combustion: A rapid chemical reaction between a fuel and an oxidizer that releases heat. The engine burns atomized jet fuel with compressed air.
