Jewel Cave National Monument

A protected area in the Black Hills of South Dakota established to preserve Jewel Cave, one of the world’s longest known cave systems.

Jewel Cave: A limestone cave in South Dakota’s Black Hills, known for its extensive passages and calcite formations. The monument’s defining natural feature is this exceptionally long cave system.
Limestone: A sedimentary rock composed chiefly of calcium carbonate, often formed from marine deposits. Jewel Cave’s passages developed within thick limestone beds.
Frank and Albert Michaud: Brothers credited with discovering Jewel Cave in 1900 near Custer, South Dakota. Their discovery brought the cave to public attention and began its documented history.
Cave tourism: Travel to caves for guided visits, recreation, education, or appreciation of underground landscapes. Guided tours let visitors experience selected passages while limiting impacts.
Calcite spar: A transparent crystalline form of calcite that commonly lines Jewel Cave’s walls. Its gleaming crystals inspired the cave’s name and remain a signature formation.
Carbonic acid: A weak acid formed when carbon dioxide dissolves in water. Water containing carbonic acid dissolved limestone and enlarged the cave’s fractures.
1908 in the United States: The year President Theodore Roosevelt established Jewel Cave National Monument by proclamation. Federal protection began when the monument was established in 1908.
Caving: The recreational exploration of caves, also called spelunking or potholing. Permitted exploration has helped document passages beyond standard tour routes.
Wind Cave National Park: A South Dakota national park protecting Wind Cave and surrounding prairie and forest ecosystems. This nearby protected area shares the Black Hills setting and a major cave system.
Speleogenesis: The geological processes by which caves form and change over time. Jewel Cave’s passage network is a result of long-term cave-forming processes.
