Jiankang

Jiankang was the capital of several Southern Chinese regimes, including the Eastern Jin and the Southern Dynasties. Its site lies beneath present-day Nanjing.

Nanjing: Nanjing is a major city in eastern China, historically known by several names, including Jiankang. Jiankang occupied the site of the modern city.
Yangtze River: The Yangtze is Asia’s longest river and a major waterway across central and eastern China. The river supported Jiankang’s transport, defense, and connection to southern territories.

Jianye: Jianye was the name of the city that became Jiankang under the Eastern Jin dynasty. Its earlier name traces the city’s development before the Eastern Jin capital.
Yangtze River Delta: The Yangtze River Delta is a densely populated region where the Yangtze meets the East China Sea. Jiankang commanded a strategic position near the delta’s waterways and productive lands.
Southern Qi: Southern Qi was a Chinese dynasty that ruled from 479 to 502, with its capital at Jiankang. Its short reign continued the city’s role as the Southern Dynasties’ seat of power.
Nanjing Massacre: The Nanjing Massacre was the mass killing and violence committed by Japanese forces after capturing Nanjing in 1937. It is a much later event in the same city, distinct from Jiankang’s ancient history.
Eastern Jin dynasty: The Eastern Jin was a Chinese dynasty that ruled from 317 to 420, with its court at Jiankang. The dynasty established Jiankang as its capital after losing northern territory.
Jiankang Palace: Jiankang Palace was the imperial palace complex of the southern courts based in Jiankang. The palace concentrated the government and ceremonial authority within the capital.
