Jihad of Usman dan Fodio

A religious and political uprising in Hausaland, launched in 1804 under Usman dan Fodio, that defeated several Hausa rulers and established the Sokoto Caliphate.

Gudu: A settlement in present-day Niger where Usman dan Fodio and his followers gathered after leaving Gobir in 1804. The community formed here became the uprising’s initial base after Usman’s flight from Gobir.
Gobir: A Hausa kingdom whose rulers opposed Usman dan Fodio and whose capital was among the uprising’s major targets. Conflict with Gobir’s rulers precipitated the movement’s break with the existing order.
Abdullahi dan Fodio: Usman dan Fodio’s brother, scholar, and commander, who helped lead the jihad and govern the caliphate. His writings and leadership helped organize the movement beyond Usman’s own community.

Bawa Jan Gwarzo: A ruler of Gobir who granted Usman dan Fodio permission to preach in his domains in the late eighteenth century. His earlier protection preceded the later hostility between Gobir’s court and the reform movement.
Nana Asma’u: A nineteenth-century Fulani poet, scholar, and teacher, daughter of Usman dan Fodio. Her teaching networks carried the movement’s religious legacy across generations.
Emirate of Kano: A major emirate within the Sokoto Caliphate, established after the conquest of the Hausa kingdom of Kano. Its creation shows how conquered kingdoms were reorganized under caliphal authority.
Sokoto Caliphate: A nineteenth-century Muslim state in West Africa founded through the jihad led by Usman dan Fodio. The uprising was a campaign of conquest; the caliphate was the resulting state.
