Jingnan campaign

The Jingnan campaign was a civil war fought from 1399 to 1402 between the Ming emperor Jianwen and his uncle Zhu Di. Zhu Di’s victory made him the Yongle Emperor.

Jianwen Emperor: The second Ming emperor, who ruled from 1398 until his overthrow in 1402. His attempt to reduce princely power prompted Zhu Di’s revolt.
Hongwu Emperor: The founding emperor of the Ming dynasty, who ruled from 1368 to 1398. His distribution of princely fiefs left powerful relatives near the frontier.
Zhu Di: A son of the Hongwu Emperor who became the Yongle Emperor after overthrowing his nephew. His military and political campaign was the rebellion’s driving force.
Battle of Zhengcunba: A 1399 battle near Beijing in which Zhu Di’s forces defeated an imperial army. The victory established the rebels as a serious military threat.
Ming Yongle era: The period of Ming rule under the Yongle Emperor, from 1402 to 1424. The new emperor used victory to consolidate rule and pursue ambitious state projects.
Yongle Emperor: The third Ming emperor, formerly known as Zhu Di, who ruled from 1402 to 1424. He led the rebellion and claimed the throne after victory.
Ming princely fiefs: Territories and military commands assigned to Ming imperial princes, especially during the dynasty’s early years. The fiefs gave Zhu Di a regional power base and troops.
Zhu Yunwen: The personal name of the Jianwen Emperor, the Ming ruler whom Zhu Di overthrew. His fate after Nanjing fell remains uncertain.
Battle of Baigou River: A major battle in 1400 between Zhu Di’s army and forces loyal to Jianwen. The result helped open the route south toward the imperial heartland.
Relocation of the Ming capital: The transfer of the Ming imperial capital from Nanjing to Beijing, completed during the Yongle reign. The conquest helped bring Zhu Di’s northern power base to the center of government.
