Jingtai Emperor

The seventh Ming emperor, Zhu Qiyu ruled from 1449 to 1457 after his elder brother, the Zhengtong Emperor, was captured by the Oirat Mongols. His reign centered on defending Beijing and holding power amid the crisis.

Tumu Crisis: A 1449 Ming military disaster in which Oirat forces captured the Zhengtong Emperor and defeated his army. The crisis left the capital without its emperor and created the opening for Zhu Qiyu's accession.
Battle of Beijing: A 1449 defense of Beijing in which Ming forces repelled the Oirat army after the Tumu Crisis. The victory secured Jingtai's capital and made continued resistance possible.
