Jiuzhaigou

Jiuzhaigou is a protected mountain valley in northern Sichuan, China, famed for clear, vividly colored lakes, waterfalls, and forested landscapes shaped by limestone geology.

Travertine: A porous limestone deposited when calcium-rich water releases carbon dioxide and precipitates calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate deposits form pale dams and ledges around many of the valley’s lakes.
Calcium carbonate: A chemical compound, CaCO₃, found in limestone, chalk, and many shells. It precipitates from mineral-rich water to build travertine features in the valley.
