Knowra João Guimarães Rosa João Guimarães Rosa João Guimarães Rosa (1908–1967) was a Brazilian novelist, short-story writer, and diplomat whose inventive language and portrayal of the sertão reshaped Brazilian literature.
Sertão : The arid interior backlands of northeastern Brazil, marked by sparse settlement and distinctive social and cultural traditions. Its landscapes and social worlds supply the setting and imaginative terrain of much of Rosa’s fiction.
The Devil to Pay in the Backlands : A 1956 novel by Guimarães Rosa, narrated by Riobaldo, a former jagunço recounting violence, love, and the possibility of a pact with the devil. This novel brings his invented language, backlands setting, and philosophical questions together on the largest scale.
João Neves da Fontoura : A Brazilian diplomat and politician who served as foreign minister and represented Brazil abroad. As foreign minister, he appointed Rosa to diplomatic posts during Rosa’s career in the Itamaraty.
