Johann Gottlieb Fichte

Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762–1814) was a German philosopher who developed a system of idealism centered on the self’s active role in shaping experience and moral action.

Immanuel Kant: An eighteenth-century German philosopher whose critical philosophy examined the limits and conditions of human knowledge. Fichte recast Kant’s account of experience as a more unified system grounded in activity.
Wissenschaftslehre: Fichte’s foundational philosophical project, often translated as the Science of Knowledge. It presents the systematic account of how knowing and acting arise from the self.
Aenesidemus: A 1792 book by Gottlob Ernst Schulze that criticized the foundations of Kantian and Reinholdian philosophy. Its skeptical challenge helped prompt Fichte to seek a more secure first principle.
