Johann Gustav Droysen

Johann Gustav Droysen (1808–1884) was a German historian and politician whose studies of Hellenistic history and theory of historical understanding helped shape modern historiography.

Historicism: An approach that understands human institutions and ideas through their historical development and particular circumstances. Droysen treated historical inquiry as interpretation grounded in the distinct conditions of each age.
Historik: Droysen’s unfinished theory of historical inquiry, published in successive versions from 1857 onward. It sets out his account of historical understanding, interpretation, and explanation.
Leopold von Ranke: A German historian known for archival research and the ideal of representing the past as it happened. Comparing Ranke’s source-centered ideal with Droysen’s interpretive method clarifies their differing accounts of historical knowledge.
