Johannes Rydberg

Johannes Rydberg (1854–1919) was a Swedish physicist who studied atomic spectra and formulated a constant that organizes spectral lines into regular series.

Rydberg formula: A formula that predicts the wavelengths of spectral lines in hydrogen and hydrogen-like atoms. It expresses the spectral regularities Rydberg quantified in a mathematical form.
Hydrogen spectral series: Groups of hydrogen emission or absorption lines associated with transitions to particular energy levels. Their regular spacing supplied a clear example of the pattern Rydberg sought to describe.
Anders Jonas Ångström: A Swedish physicist who measured and catalogued the wavelengths of light emitted by elements. Ångström’s precise spectral measurements formed part of the data landscape Rydberg studied.
Spectroscopy: The study of how matter interacts with electromagnetic radiation across wavelengths or frequencies. Rydberg’s formulas emerged from spectroscopy and made its line patterns more interpretable.
