Johannes Tinctoris

Johannes Tinctoris was a 15th-century Franco-Flemish composer, music theorist, and cleric. His treatises offer major evidence for Renaissance musical theory and practice.

Counterpoint: The combination of independent melodic lines in musical composition. Tinctoris’s teaching and criticism repeatedly address how simultaneous voices should be composed.
Liber de arte contrapuncti: Tinctoris’s treatise on the rules and practice of counterpoint, completed in 1477. It is his most systematic account of composing consonant and dissonant lines.
