John B. Goodenough

John B. Goodenough was an American physicist and materials scientist whose work on oxide cathodes helped establish the lithium-ion battery.

Stanley Whittingham: A British-American chemist whose early rechargeable lithium battery used a titanium disulfide cathode. Whittingham developed an early lithium battery whose cathode Goodenough later improved.
Lithium cobalt oxide: A layered transition-metal oxide used as a high-energy cathode material in lithium-ion batteries. Goodenough and Mizushima demonstrated its ability to reversibly store lithium at high voltage.
University of Chicago: A private research university in Chicago, Illinois, founded in 1890. Goodenough earned his doctorate in physics there in 1952.
Portable electronics: Electronic devices designed for use while being carried, typically powered by batteries. High-energy lithium-ion cells enabled smaller, longer-lasting mobile devices.
Akira Yoshino: A Japanese chemist who developed a safer lithium-ion battery using a carbon anode and lithium cobalt oxide cathode. Yoshino combined Goodenough’s cathode with a carbon anode to create a practical cell.

Intercalation: The reversible insertion of guest atoms or ions into a host material’s structure. Lithium ions move into and out of oxide cathodes without destroying their layered frameworks.
